The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) is a device that allow you to control massive limb bleeding and to self-applied it with one hand.
The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) is widely used throughout the world. Almost all NATO armies use this tourniquet as a piece of emergency equipment for their soldiers. The Dutch and Belgian army, many police forces and SWAT units have also decided to adopt it.
The CAT is a true one-handed/self-aid tourniquet that has been certified as 100% effective by the U.S. Institute for Surgical Research.
Tests have proven that the CAT completely stops bleeding from one extremity in the case of a traumatic injury with significant hemorrhage.
The CAT Tourniquet (Combat Application Tourniquet) utilizes a windlass system with a free moving internal cord. This system provides real circumferential pressure on the injured limb and results in a rapid end to massive bleeding by stopping blood flow to the extremity.
Once properly tightened, the bleeding will stop and the windlass is locked in place. A velcro strap is then applied to secure the windlass to maintain pressure during evacuation.
The CAT Tourniquet's unique double-safety fastening system avoids the use of screws and clips which can be difficult to manipulate under stress or when fine motor skills are compromised.
The CAT Tourniquet was named the best pre-hospital tourniquet in the February 2008 supplement of the Journal of Trauma. It is also approved by the U.S. National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA).
A CAT is a single-use device. The one you intend for an actual IFAK cannot be used for training.
